Extractions should never be painful. Pain indicates that the area of your mouth is not fully anesthetized. We pledge to take care that you are comfortable throughout this, and any procedure, for that matter.  For any procedure, we also provide you instructions to ensure a fast and uneventful recovery.  Please feel free to discuss all of your concerns.
Surgery is sometimes also necessary to remove suspicious tissue for evaluation in a lab. It is called biopsy, which is the removal of tissues, cells, or fluids for lab evaluation. It is indicated when tissues have unusual structure or condition, does not heal over a normal 2 week period of time when most traumatized tissues would heal.

A lab evaluation will definitively determine if the abnormal tissue is benign or cancerous. Determining the exact problem of abnormal tissue and addressing it is better than waiting and not knowing. Also, as with all problems, prognosis is far better when dealt with before symptoms arise or the problem spreads and grows.

We understand that dental procedures can be intimidating. To reduce and eliminate anxiety/fear from preventing needed dental work being completed, Nitrous Oxide, oral sedatives and IV sedation can be utilized.

Please see our section on Sedation for more information.

We understand that dental procedures can be intimidating, but it is even more intimidating to not treat problems earlier.  In the above x-ray, a large cyst developed from an un-erupted wisdom tooth, destroying all the bone in the area (red circle).  Fortunately for this patient, even though there was extensive bone damage, the biopsy proved that it was only a benign cyst. Extensive bone grafting was needed to repair the defect in this young patient's mouth.
